Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality
Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. They are the perfect addition to families with a variety of members. They can become bored quickly and discover ways to entertain themselves when their owners aren't engaging with them enough often. Macaws who aren't properly socialized can become aggressive and can even bite. It is crucial that boundaries are clearly established so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds who love to play, interact and climb. They require 2 to 3 hours each day out of their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games, listening to music and learning tricks. They also enjoy going to parks and playgrounds as well as hiking and going to local restaurants and bars. Apart from being a great pet, they are also great companions for children.
The birds can be quite loud, despite their adoration for their mate. They can also be a nuisance for people living near. They are capable of loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which can be disruptive in condominiums and apartments, or near young children who might be startled by their noise.
This species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. Because of this the only way to reliably determine sex is via DNA testing. Once the bird's sex is established the breeding process can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to master commands and phrases. This can be a long process and the owner must be patient and recognize that this is a challenging task. Positive reinforcement can to speed up the process and help correct any behavior issues.
Lolita's care
For years activists have been lobbying for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her hoped that Lolita would have a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to go back to the sea.
Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, overexerting her with head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, making her lose weight and harming her immune system. They also place her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her to be a family member and plan that would eventually take her to the open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary on Washington's west coast in which she could reside for the remainder of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami home and be was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Activists from across the country have demanded Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. They include Ric O'Barry, who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

After you have completed Lolita's Teacher Education Program You will be able to teach The Pilates Method anywhere on the globe! Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

It is unclear what specific health issues are plaguing the orca, since her captor isn't required to divulge the information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease is often a role in the deaths of captive orcas.
Despite the ongoing health issues Many are hopeful that Lolita may be closer to living in the wild than before. The new owner of Seaquarium has stated his commitment to transfer the whale from her tank into her home waters in the Pacific.
After years of pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea where she can take a deep dive in the ocean and possibly even be reconnect with her orca mother. Unfortunately, these plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a renal problem.
